On the first level, you’re going along a beach and can feel the steps you make in the sand. Each bit of grain is felt through your hand, which makes it intense in the best way. Then, the magic starts happening when these features are combined.

Better graphics and faster load times are fine, but the subtle effects that are imparted via the controller are something new — and something wonderful. And Astro shows that while Sony might excel at realistic and sometimes dark games, it’s also very capable of making a title that young kids can enjoy. While it might not be as deep and rich a world as Super Mario Bros., Astro’s Playroom is a title that young and old can both enjoy. In Astro’s Playroom, the adaptive triggers come up a lot, but the most obvious demonstration of them is when Astro hops into a spring suit. Once inside, the game turns into a side-scrolling platformer, as Astro is able to launch itself to the left or right using a giant spring in its legs.

After the third and final use of the Hang Glider, on the right you’ll find a Bot in a slingshot, which you can Punch to send flying into some boxes. This references the 2007 game PAIN on PlayStation 3, developed by Idol Minds. It’s notable for becoming the most popular downloadable game on the PlayStation Network at the time.

At the second Checkpoint, look left to spot a giant white robot with a rock club, and a Bot with a sword and tunic on a tiny pinnacle in front of him. This references 2005’s Shadow of the Colossus on PS2 by Team Ico. In 2018, the game received a PS4 remake by Bluepoint Studios. At the start of GPU Jungle, check along the left-hand side between two trees for a lower section with four Bots with various weapons on their backs huddled around a campfire. This is a reference to 2002’s Monster Hunter on PS2, developed by Capcom. The use of PSPs however refers to an expanded 2006 PSP port, Monster Hunter Freedom, which was even more popular than the original.
You’ll see a bot holding a camera throughout the levels as they record their companions as fellow PlayStation characters. For example, you’ll see bots dressed up as Kratos and Atreus from God of War trying to row a boat. You’ll even see a bot dressed up as Snake from Metal Gear Solid, and when you kick the box, it makes the classic alert sound each time you kick.
When you get to the very top, look in the background to spot two bots playing “Bot Fighter”. LUCK8 is a reference to Street Fighter, Capcom’s famous fighting game franchise that debuted in 1987. While the original Street Fighter never came to PS1, Street Fighter II and Super Street Fighter did. After reaching the first Checkpoint in Caching Caves, look for a box frame structure in the ground you can drop into. In addition to a Puzzle Piece, you’ll see a Bot prancing down a line and clearing various shape-based obstacles. This refers to 1999’s Vib-Ribbon on PS1, developed by NanaOn-Sha.
Unlike other platform games, this has a trick up its sleeve in the form of the DualSense controller’s ability to let you feel your way around levels. So often that’s where magic in video games happens, and that’s most certainly the case here. On its own, this is a beautifully crafted, exquisitely paced and absolutely gorgeous 3D platformer. Combined with the hardware it’s bundled on, it’s something very special indeed – and one of the best launch titles I can remember in an age.
